What should you know about intramedullary nail femur surgery?

The femur is the strong bone between the hip and knee. During surgery, the nail is guided through the marrow cavity so the broken segments can be held in alignment while healing occurs. Screws can limit rotation and shortening. The exact entry point and nail design depend on where the fracture is, its pattern, the condition of the skin and other injuries. This is a form of Fracture Fixation Surgery. An Intramedullary Nail may remain in place after the bone heals unless pain, infection or another clinical reason leads to a later discussion.

Before surgery, tell the team about medicines, allergies and medical conditions. Afterward, follow the permitted weight-bearing level carefully; it may change as healing is checked. Early ankle and knee movement, breathing exercises and supervised walking can reduce stiffness and help restore function. Keep wounds clean and attend follow-up appointments so healing and alignment can be reviewed. Pain control, nutrition and gradual strengthening all support rehabilitation. Do not add impact exercise or heavy lifting until the surgical team confirms that the fracture can tolerate it.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or a new inability to move the leg as instructed. Urgent help is needed for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or a leg that becomes markedly swollen and painful. A cold, pale or numb foot also needs immediate assessment.

Ask where the fracture is and why a nail fits its pattern, how much weight you may place on the leg, and what exercises are safe at each stage. Clarify wound care, expected follow-up imaging, work and driving restrictions, and which symptoms should prompt an urgent call.
