What should you know about intractable sneezing?

Sneezing is a protective reflex that clears irritants from the nose. Repeated sneezing with an itchy or blocked nose, watery eyes and clear discharge often occurs with allergic rhinitis. House dust mites, pets, pollen, smoke, perfume and cleaning products can trigger nasal irritation. A common cold may cause sneezing alongside a sore throat, cough or feeling unwell. The symptom alone cannot identify which cause is present, and several triggers can overlap.

Notice where and when sneezing starts, whether it follows contact with dust or animals, and whether you have fever, nasal blockage or eye symptoms. Reduce exposure to a clear trigger, ventilate rooms and avoid smoke and strong fragrances. Saline rinsing may soothe the nose when used with safe, clean water and proper equipment. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medication is suitable, especially if you have other conditions, take medicines or are pregnant. Do not use decongestant nasal sprays for longer than directed.

Arrange an assessment if sneezing persists, disrupts sleep, affects work, or comes with ongoing nasal blockage, recurrent sinus discomfort or reduced sense of smell. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing, faintness or a rapidly spreading rash after an exposure. These can signal a serious allergic reaction and need immediate treatment.
