Intertrigo rash under the breast: what to know

The skin beneath the breast can stay warm and damp, especially after exercise or in hot weather. Rubbing from skin or a bra may leave redness, burning, itching, tenderness, softening or small cracks. A yeast infection may produce a brighter red rash with irritation beyond the main fold. A new breast lump, nipple change or deep breast pain is not explained by intertrigo and should be assessed separately.

Clean gently and dry the fold carefully after bathing and sweating. A cool setting on a hair dryer can help remove lingering moisture. Wear a well-fitting, breathable bra and change it when damp; avoid perfumed powders, deodorants and vigorous rubbing on broken skin. A clean dry cotton layer may reduce contact, but replace it when moist. If yeast is suspected, ask about Topical Antifungal Treatment rather than guessing from appearance.

Arrange an examination if the rash persists, spreads, cracks, bleeds, smells unusual or returns repeatedly. Seek prompt care for pus, rapidly increasing warmth or swelling, severe pain, fever, a new breast lump or nipple discharge. These features can signal infection or a separate breast problem requiring different care.
