Intertrigo odor: causes and next steps

A warm fold can hold sweat and shed skin, creating conditions for microbes to multiply. The rash may be red, shiny, itchy, sore, or cracked. Odor by itself does not identify the organism or prove that an infection is present. A new smell with wetness, pus, increasing warmth, swelling, or pain is more concerning for secondary infection. Rinse gently, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and pat the fold dry. Change sweaty clothing quickly and choose breathable fabrics. Do not mask odor with perfume, deodorant, alcohol, bleach, or essential oils; these can inflame already damaged skin.
