Intertrigo on black skin: what to know

Intertrigo is irritation in a warm, touching fold. On richly pigmented skin, inflammation can be subtle or show as deepening colour, purple tones, grey-brown patches, swelling, sheen, scaling, or a change in texture. Itching, burning, tenderness, moisture, cracks, and smell can provide useful clues. Darkening may remain after the active irritation settles; that colour change does not by itself prove that infection is still present.

Clean gently with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free product, then pat dry carefully. Reduce rubbing with breathable clothing and take damp garments off promptly. Avoid bleaching agents, scrubs, lemon juice, and unprescribed lightening creams; they can injure the skin and make colour change more noticeable. Arrange an examination when the patch is painful, rapidly changing, cracked, draining, foul-smelling, or spreading, or when symptoms persist despite keeping the fold dry. Prompt care is needed for fever, pus, marked swelling, warmth, red streaks, or feeling ill. New thickening or a one-sided persistent change should also be assessed rather than treated only for colour.

Ask what signs show active inflammation on your skin tone, whether infection is present, and which treatment will avoid irritation or unwanted lightening. Mention how the area looked before the flare and whether colour changes remain after itching and soreness improve.
