What should you know about intertrigo areas?

Common intertrigo areas include the groin, inner thighs, underarms, beneath the breasts, lower abdomen, between buttocks, and other folds that touch or rub. The skin may look red, shiny, cracked, damp, or sore, with itching or burning. Once the barrier is irritated, yeast or bacteria can sometimes add infection. A sharply bordered, scaly, or ring-shaped rash may point toward another diagnosis, so location alone does not prove the cause.

Clean folds with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Change damp clothing, use breathable fabrics, and separate touching surfaces with a clean, dry layer if advised. A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment when yeast is suspected or help control excessive sweating with a prescription antiperspirant. Stop any product that stings or causes new redness and seek advice about persistent symptoms.

Arrange medical review if the rash is recurrent, spreading, cracked, malodorous, or not improving with moisture control. Seek prompt care for pus, increasing warmth or swelling, severe tenderness, fever, or red streaking. People with diabetes or a weakened immune system should seek advice earlier because damaged folds can become infected.

Ask whether this is intertrigo, a skin yeast infection, or another fold condition; whether a swab or scraping is useful; and how long to use any cream. Discuss sweat control, clothing, barrier care, and what to do if the rash returns in the same area.
