What should you know about intertrigo antibiotics?

Intertrigo develops where warm, moist skin rubs together, such as beneath the breasts, in the groin, between the abdomen and thigh, or in the armpits. The rash may be caused by friction and moisture alone, or complicated by bacteria or yeast. Antibiotics do not treat every intertrigo rash, and using an unsuitable product can irritate already damaged skin.

A clinician may examine the colour, edges, drainage, odour, tenderness, and spread of the rash. Pus, increasing warmth, marked pain, or redness extending beyond the fold can suggest a bacterial complication such as cellulitis. A swab or other test may be considered when the diagnosis is uncertain or treatment has not helped.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat the fold completely dry, and change damp clothing promptly. Loose, breathable fabric reduces rubbing. A clean, dry absorbent layer can separate touching surfaces, but it should be changed when moist. Avoid sharing towels and avoid applying leftover antibiotics, steroid mixtures, or fragranced products unless a clinician has advised them.

If a prescription antibiotic is given, use it exactly as directed and complete the planned course unless the prescriber changes it. Ask what to do if you develop a rash, swelling, severe diarrhoea, or another reaction. Improvement should be assessed alongside the skin-care measures, because persistent moisture can allow the problem to return.

Arrange medical assessment if the rash is spreading, increasingly painful, hot, swollen, cracked, or producing pus or a strong new odour. Seek urgent help for fever with rapidly worsening redness, severe weakness, confusion, or difficulty staying awake. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or repeated skin-fold infections should seek advice early because skin damage can worsen more quickly.

Ask whether the rash looks bacterial, fungal, irritant, or mixed; whether a swab is needed; how long to use the prescribed medicine; and which drying or barrier method suits that skin fold. Mention recent antibiotics, allergies, diabetes, and any previous episodes.
