What should you know about interpretation of ogtt?

An oral glucose tolerance test usually starts with a fasting blood sample, followed by a glucose drink and further samples at scheduled times. Each result is matched to the time it was taken; a fasting value cannot be interpreted in the same way as a later value. A result above the threshold used by your maternity service may lead to a diagnosis of gestational diabetes or to repeat assessment, depending on the test protocol. Symptoms are not a reliable substitute for the measurements, and one report should be read alongside your pregnancy history and other checks.

Ask the clinician to identify which reading was outside the target range and what that means for your care. If gestational diabetes is diagnosed, follow-up may include home glucose checks, food guidance, activity advice, and medication when needed.
