What should you know about internal TENS unit?

TENS means transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. A small device sends controlled pulses through adhesive electrodes on the skin, which may alter how pain signals are perceived and may encourage comfortable movement. It does not repair a torn structure or establish the cause of pain. The phrase internal TENS may describe a question about using stimulation near an internal body area; that is not a routine self-care method and should not be improvised.

Have a clinician show you electrode placement, intensity adjustment, session timing, and skin checks. Use intact skin and follow the device instructions. Remove electrodes if burning, rash, dizziness, or increasing pain occurs. Do not place them over the front of the neck, across the chest, on broken skin, or near an implanted electronic device unless your clinician specifically approves it. Treat TENS as one part of a plan that may include movement, strengthening, and activity changes.

Seek medical advice for new unexplained pain, progressive weakness, loss of sensation, fainting, chest symptoms, or a severe reaction to stimulation. Stop using the device and contact a clinician if the skin remains irritated or the symptoms worsen. Pain relief from TENS should not delay assessment after an injury or when symptoms suggest a neurological or medical problem.
