Internal growth scan

A growth scan measures parts of the baby to estimate growth and reviews movement, heartbeat, fluid around the baby, placenta location, and presentation. Most scans use a probe over the abdomen. An internal vaginal probe may be considered when the cervix, placenta edge, or a low area of the uterus needs a closer view, particularly earlier in pregnancy; it is not the usual meaning of a growth scan. Measurements are compared with earlier findings and your pregnancy history, so one result does not by itself diagnose a problem. A [3D/4D Ultrasound](/technology/3d-4d-ultrasound/) is a different imaging option and is not required for routine growth assessment.

Follow the imaging centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, and bladder preparation because these can vary with the scan type and stage of pregnancy. Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen, and tell the sonographer if you have pain, bleeding, or difficulty lying flat. Ask which measurements are being taken, whether the placenta and fluid look reassuring, and when the report will be reviewed. A scan appointment should not replace urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions before your expected labour, fainting, fever, or a noticeable reduction in fetal movements after you have been advised how to monitor them. Contact your maternity team promptly if you develop these symptoms. After an internal examination, seek advice for persistent bleeding, worsening pain, fever, or unusual discharge.
