Intermittent diarrhoea: causes, self-care, and when to get help

Short answer

Intermittent diarrhoea can follow infection, food triggers, medicines, or bowel conditions, so recurring episodes merit a structured review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Record
Meals, medicines, travel, stool changes, pain, fever, and symptom-free periods
Priority
Replace fluids and seek help for blood, severe pain, or dehydration

Possible explanations

A short-lived episode may follow food poisoning or gastroenteritis. Reactions to lactose, gluten, or another food can recur after a particular meal. Irritable bowel syndrome may cause alternating bowel habits with abdominal discomfort. Coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, and hyperthyroidism can also produce ongoing bowel changes, often with other features. Giardiasis is more relevant after untreated water, travel, or close-contact exposure. Diarrhoea is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Managing episodes

Keep drinking regularly and consider oral rehydration advice from a pharmacist if stools are frequent. Choose simple foods you tolerate, wash hands carefully, and record meals, medicines, stool appearance, pain, fever, travel, and symptom-free intervals. Do not stop prescribed medicines or begin a restrictive diet without advice. A clinician may review hydration, examine your abdomen, and arrange stool or blood tests when the pattern warrants it.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for blood or black stools, severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine. Arrange medical review for persistent or frequently returning diarrhoea, night-time symptoms, fever, unintentional weight loss, or symptoms after travel. Young children, older adults, and people with significant health conditions may need earlier advice.

Questions for your doctor

Could food, medicine, infection, thyroid activity, or inflammatory bowel disease explain the pattern? Do I need stool or blood tests? What hydration plan and warning signs apply to me?

Questions people ask

Can intermittent diarrhoea be caused by food intolerance?

Yes. A recurring response after a particular food can fit food intolerance, although infection and bowel conditions can look similar.

Should recurring diarrhoea be investigated?

Yes, especially when it persists, returns often, wakes you at night, or comes with blood, fever, weight loss, or significant pain.
