What should you know about intermediate risk neuroblastoma?

Risk grouping helps the oncology team estimate how intensively to treat neuroblastoma while considering the child's age, the tumour's location, whether it has spread, its appearance under a microscope and molecular findings. Intermediate risk does not describe a single tumour pattern or predict one fixed course. The team may also review chromosome changes, blood or urine markers and how much tumour can be removed safely.

The plan can involve observation, surgery, chemotherapy or a combination. Some children need treatment to shrink a tumour before an operation; others may be monitored closely when the tumour is responding or showing features that support less intensive care.

Keep a written record of pathology terms, scans, medicines and scheduled reviews. Ask which findings placed your child in the intermediate-risk group, whether tissue testing is complete and how response will be checked. Surgery may be considered when removal is safe, while chemotherapy can be used to control or shrink disease. Specialist teams may discuss other treatments only when the clinical situation calls for them, including tumour removal surgery, chemotherapy or targeted radioisotope therapy.

Contact the treating team promptly for fever, unusual bleeding, repeated vomiting, worsening pain, new weakness, breathing difficulty, marked sleepiness or reduced urine. Follow the team's instructions about fever during treatment because infection can become serious quickly. Seek emergency help for severe breathing problems, collapse, a seizure or bleeding that does not stop.
