What should you know about an interlocking intramedullary nail?

The nail sits within the bone's central canal. Locking screws pass through the bone and nail near one or both ends, helping prevent unwanted twisting or shortening. Surgeons may use this approach for selected fractures of the femur, tibia or other long bones. The exact design depends on the bone, fracture pattern, soft-tissue injury and overall health.

The implant provides internal support, but bone healing still takes time. Pain, swelling and reduced strength can continue after surgery. Follow-up imaging and examination help the surgical team judge alignment and healing before activity is advanced.

Follow the weight-bearing instructions exactly; they may differ between the injured limb and stages of healing. Attend wound checks and imaging appointments, keep the incision instructions in view, and complete the prescribed exercises. Physiotherapy commonly works on joint movement, muscle activation, balance and a gradual return to walking.

Use crutches or another aid until your team changes the plan. Avoid lifting, impact or driving until you have clear permission. Smoking, poor nutrition and uncontrolled medical conditions can interfere with bone healing, so raise these issues early with the treating team.

Contact the surgical team urgently for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, sudden calf swelling, chest pain or breathlessness. Seek immediate help for a newly cold or pale foot, severe escalating pain, new weakness or loss of sensation. A fall or new impact should be reported if it changes pain, limb shape or the ability to bear weight.

Ask which bone and fracture features led to this fixation choice, how much weight you may place through the limb, and what signs indicate healing. Discuss screw or nail removal only if symptoms or healing make it relevant; removal is not automatically required.
