How intense should a TENS unit feel?

Short answer
A TENS unit should produce clear, comfortable tingling; lower the intensity if it becomes painful, hot, or irritating.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How TENS intensity feels
Intensity is the strength of the electrical pulse you notice through the pads. Most people aim for a distinct tingling that does not cause pain or force the muscles to jerk. A stronger setting is not automatically more helpful. The best level is one you can tolerate for the prescribed session while keeping the pads and leads secure.
A change in sensation can come from a loose pad, dry skin, damaged lead, or a different placement. If the area is numb, do not rely on intensity alone because the skin may not warn you about irritation. TENS is a comfort measure and should not delay evaluation of a new or unexplained symptom.
Using the setting carefully
Read the device directions, attach pads to clean, dry, unbroken skin, and begin at a low setting. Increase in small steps until the tingling is obvious but comfortable. Recheck the skin after the session and remove the pads if redness persists or the skin becomes sore.
Keep electrodes away from the front of the neck, eyes, open wounds, and areas of reduced sensation. Do not use TENS in water, while asleep, or while operating a vehicle. Discuss use with a clinician if you have an implanted electrical device or another condition that makes electrical stimulation uncertain.
When to get medical help
Stop using the unit for burning, blistering, persistent irritation, unusual swelling, new weakness, or worsening numbness. Get emergency help for chest pressure, breathlessness, fainting, or sudden neurological symptoms; these signs require medical assessment, not intensity adjustment.
Useful questions
Ask your doctor or physiotherapist where to place the pads, which programme fits your pain, how long to use it, and what to do if the tingling stops feeling comfortable.

Questions people ask
Is a higher TENS setting better?
Not necessarily. Choose a noticeable setting that remains comfortable and follows the device or clinician guidance.
Why does my TENS unit suddenly feel sharper?
A pad may be loose or the skin may be dry or irritated. Switch it off, inspect the pads and skin, and seek advice if the problem continues.
