What should you know about intense vulvar itching?

The vulva can become itchy after contact with fragranced washes, wipes, pads, detergents, lubricants, or topical medicines. Contact dermatitis is one possible explanation. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus, and other inflammatory skin conditions can also affect this sensitive area. A skin yeast infection may cause itch with soreness or altered discharge, while scabies can cause intense itch that is worse at night and may affect close contacts.

The itch itself does not identify one diagnosis. Scratching can create small breaks, swelling, and secondary irritation, which can make the cycle harder to settle. A clinician may inspect the skin and ask about discharge, pain, sores, new products, urinary symptoms, and symptoms elsewhere on the body.

Rinse with lukewarm water or use a mild, unscented cleanser on the external skin only, then pat dry. Wear loose breathable underwear, change out of damp clothing, and stop newly introduced fragranced products. Keep fingernails short and use a cool compress rather than scratching.

Avoid inserting creams, antiseptics, or anti-itch products unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised them for your symptoms. Do not assume every episode is yeast infection; the wrong product can prolong irritation and obscure examination findings.

Arrange medical assessment if itching is intense, persistent, recurrent, or accompanied by discharge, burning urination, bleeding, sores, blisters, skin colour change, or pain. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, fever, severe pain, or difficulty passing urine.

Tell the clinician when the itch began, what products touch the area, whether discharge or sores are present, and whether anyone close to you itches. Ask whether a swab, skin examination, or treatment pause is needed.
