What should you know about intense thumb pain?

Short answer
Intense thumb pain can involve a tendon, joint, ligament, or nerve and is worth assessing when it limits grip or movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What intense thumb pain can mean
Pain at the thumb base or along the wrist side may follow repetitive gripping, lifting, texting, or a new hand activity. Swelling and pain when moving the thumb can occur with tendon irritation; De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is one condition that presents with pain on the thumb side of the wrist. A fall or twist may injure a ligament or joint. Numbness, colour change, or a thumb that looks out of position needs a different level of attention.
What to do now
Reduce gripping, pinching, lifting, and repeated thumb scrolling while the pain is intense. Keep objects close to the palm and use the other hand for tasks where possible. A thumb-supporting splint may limit aggravating movement, but it should not cause numbness, colour change, or increasing pressure. A wrapped cold pack can help after an injury or with swelling. Seek assessment if pain persists, grip is weak, or daily tasks remain difficult.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care after a forceful injury if the thumb is visibly crooked, cannot move, is very swollen, or feels numb or cold. Prompt review is needed for severe pain with redness and warmth, spreading swelling, or fever. Arrange a clinical assessment when pain continues despite reducing use, repeatedly returns with gripping, or prevents work, dressing, or cooking.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which structure is most likely irritated, whether a splint would help, and which thumb movements to avoid. Ask whether hand therapy could restore motion and grip, how to modify work or phone use, and what symptoms would require quicker review.

Questions people ask
Can repetitive gripping cause intense thumb pain?
Yes. Repeated gripping or pinching can irritate tendons and joints, but intense pain or loss of grip should be assessed rather than repeatedly tested.
What is De Quervain's Tenosynovitis?
De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is a tendon-sheath problem that can cause pain on the thumb side of the wrist, often aggravated by thumb movement and gripping.
