What should you know about intense sneezing?

Sneezing is a protective reflex that clears irritants from the nose. Repeated bursts with an itchy nose, watery eyes, or clear discharge can occur with allergic rhinitis, including reactions to house dust mites or pets. A blocked or runny nose with sore throat, cough, or feeling unwell may fit a common cold. Smoke, fragrance, dust, and sudden changes in air temperature can also trigger symptoms without an infection.

Notice the pattern: symptoms that return in a particular room, around an animal, or during cleaning can provide useful clues. Sneezing alone does not identify one cause.

Move away from smoke, strong scents, and visible dust, and ventilate the room if practical. Wash your hands after blowing your nose and avoid rubbing your eyes. Saline nasal rinsing may help remove irritants when performed with sterile or previously boiled and cooled water. A pharmacist can explain whether an allergy medication is suitable, especially if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or have a long-term condition. Keep a brief record of triggers and associated symptoms.

Arrange medical advice if sneezing continues, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or comes with persistent nasal blockage, facial pain, or breathing symptoms. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, throat tightness, wheezing, faintness, or trouble breathing, because these can signal a serious allergic reaction. Fever with marked illness, chest pain, or worsening symptoms also deserves prompt assessment.
