Instant relief from a runny nose

A runny nose happens when the lining inside the nose produces extra fluid. Common cold, allergic rhinitis, dust-mite or pet allergy, influenza, COVID-19, and sinusitis can all present with a runny nose. The pattern gives clues: itching and repeated sneezing often fit allergy, while sore throat, cough, fever, or feeling unwell can accompany infection. A runny nose by itself cannot identify the cause.

Use a sterile saline spray or rinse according to its instructions, and use safe water if preparing a nasal rinse. Blow gently one nostril at a time to reduce irritation. Rest, drink regularly, and keep away from smoke, strong scents, dust, or a known allergen. A pharmacist can explain whether an antihistamine or another product is suitable; follow the label and check first if you have other conditions, take medicines, are pregnant, or are treating a child.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, fainting, or severe weakness. Arrange medical advice for a high or persistent fever, severe facial pain or swelling, dehydration, symptoms that are worsening, or a runny nose that does not settle. Ask for advice sooner if the discharge is bloody after an injury, or if an infant is feeding poorly.
