Short answer

Insomnia is a sleep condition in which you regularly have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting restorative sleep despite having a suitable chance to rest.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Meaning
Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or feeling restored by sleep.
Daytime effect
Tiredness, irritability, or reduced attention can occur.
Useful record
A sleep diary can show patterns in sleep, naps, substances, and alertness.

What insomnia means

The term describes a pattern of unsatisfactory sleep, not simply one restless night. You may lie awake for a long time, wake repeatedly, wake earlier than planned, or feel that sleep has not refreshed you. Some people notice more than one of these patterns.

Insomnia can affect daytime life through tiredness, irritability, reduced attention, or difficulty concentrating. Worry about sleep can also make bedtime feel stressful and keep the cycle going. Short-term insomnia may follow a stressful event, illness, travel across time zones, a change in routine, or an uncomfortable sleep environment. Ongoing insomnia can have several contributing factors, including mood symptoms, pain, medicines, caffeine, alcohol, or another sleep problem.

Insomnia is different from choosing to sleep less or lacking an opportunity to sleep. A clinician considers your sleep pattern, daytime effects, health, medicines, and habits when deciding whether insomnia is present.

What you can do

Keep a regular wake-up time, including after a poor night, and allow enough time for sleep. Use the bed mainly for sleep; if you remain awake and frustrated, get up briefly for a quiet activity in dim light and return when sleepy. Keep the bedroom dark, quiet, and comfortably cool.

Reduce caffeine later in the day and avoid using alcohol as a sleep aid. Bright screens, vigorous exercise, heavy meals, and emotionally demanding work close to bedtime can also delay sleep for some people. A simple sleep diary can record bedtime, wake time, awakenings, naps, substances, and daytime alertness; this gives a clinician a clearer pattern to assess.

If sleep trouble continues or affects your functioning, arrange a medical assessment. Treatment may include behavioural sleep therapy, review of contributing conditions or medicines, and a carefully discussed role for medication when appropriate.

When to seek care

Book an appointment if poor sleep keeps returning, lasts beyond a brief change in routine, or is affecting concentration, mood, work, study, or driving. Seek assessment sooner if you snore loudly, stop breathing or gasp during sleep, have uncomfortable urges to move your legs, or take a medicine that may be disturbing sleep.

Get urgent help for thoughts of harming yourself, severe confusion, or unusually little need for sleep together with racing thoughts, marked agitation, or risky behaviour. Do not drive or operate machinery when you are dangerously sleepy.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What might be contributing to my sleep problem? Could a medicine, pain, mood change, breathing issue, or another sleep condition be involved? Which sleep changes should I try first? Would a sleep diary or behavioural sleep therapy help? If medication is considered, how long should it be used and what side effects should I watch for?

Questions people ask

Is insomnia the same as one bad night?

No. Insomnia refers to a recurring or persistent sleep problem that occurs when you have a reasonable chance to sleep and causes distress or daytime effects.

Can stress cause insomnia?

Stress can trigger sleep difficulty, and worry about sleep can maintain it. Persistent symptoms still deserve assessment because medicines, health conditions, mood changes, and other sleep disorders may contribute.

What is the first step for insomnia?

Keep a consistent wake-up time, review caffeine and alcohol, make the bedroom sleep-friendly, and record your pattern. Seek clinical advice if the problem continues or affects safety and daily functioning.
