What should you know about insomnia light therapy?

Short answer
Insomnia light therapy uses carefully timed bright light to help reset sleep timing and strengthen a regular day-night rhythm.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How light therapy works
Light entering the eyes gives the brain a time signal. Exposure at the appropriate part of the day can shift when you feel alert and when you feel ready for sleep. A clinician may ask when you naturally fall asleep and wake, then choose the timing, duration, and light intensity to match that pattern. A light box is different from ordinary room lighting; it should be used as directed and never stared into.
Light therapy may be more useful when insomnia is linked to a delayed body clock, changing work hours, or travel across time zones. It does not remove every cause of poor sleep, such as pain, medicines, mood symptoms, or breathing problems during sleep.
Using a light plan safely
Keep a sleep diary showing bedtime, time spent awake, waking time, naps, caffeine, and light exposure. Use the prescribed light source at the prescribed time, keep a consistent wake time, and reduce bright screens and overhead light near bedtime. Do not improvise timing because morning and evening exposure can move the body clock in different directions.
Speak with a clinician before starting if you have an eye condition, take medicines that increase sensitivity to light, or have a history of mania or bipolar disorder. Stop and seek advice if you develop marked eye discomfort, headache, agitation, or an unusually reduced need for sleep.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review when difficulty sleeping keeps returning, affects daytime functioning, or comes with daytime sleepiness or difficulty concentrating. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, severe confusion, or several nights of almost no sleep with racing thoughts and unusually high energy.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which light source and schedule fit your sleep pattern, what symptoms should make you stop, and whether another sleep condition or medicine needs attention first.

Questions people ask
Can light therapy replace sleep treatment?
It may be one part of a plan; persistent insomnia often needs assessment of habits, health conditions, medicines, and sleep-focused therapy.
Can I use any bright lamp?
No. A clinician or product instructions should guide the light source, distance, timing, and duration.
