Insoles for arch pain: what to know

Short answer

Insoles may reduce arch strain by redistributing pressure, but the right support depends on the cause of your pain.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main purpose
Redistribute pressure and support the foot inside the shoe
Fit check
The insole should not cause rubbing, numbness, or new pressure

How insoles can help

An insole sits inside the shoe to cushion the foot and alter how force travels from the heel through the arch. A comfortable, appropriately shaped device can make walking or standing easier when the arch is overloaded. It does not repair every source of pain, and a rigid or poorly fitting insole can create pressure in a new area.

Arch pain can occur with flat feet or with irritation of the plantar fascia. Look at the pages on [Flat Feet](/conditions/flat-feet/) and [Plantar Fasciitis](/conditions/plantar-fasciitis/) to understand these different patterns. Your symptoms are also described in [Arch Pain](/symptoms/arch-pain/).

Using insoles thoughtfully

Choose footwear with enough depth and a stable sole. Introduce a new insole for short periods, then increase wear if the foot remains comfortable. Stop using it if it causes numbness, rubbing, marked pressure, or worsening pain. A clinician can check your walking pattern, shoe fit, ankle movement, and tenderness before recommending a prefabricated option or [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/). Gentle calf and foot exercises may also be useful when matched to your assessment.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain persists despite changing activity and footwear, keeps returning, or limits normal walking. Seek prompt care for sudden severe pain, inability to bear weight, significant swelling, redness and warmth, fever, or new weakness or numbness. These features need evaluation rather than an insole trial alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what is driving the arch pain, whether your foot posture changes the advice, and whether an off-the-shelf insole is suitable. You can also ask how long to trial it, which signs mean it should be removed, and whether exercises or other treatment should accompany support.
