Inside of Top Lip Swollen: Causes and Care

The upper lip can swell after accidental biting, friction from an appliance, a burn, or contact with a new oral product. A small smooth bump may involve a salivary gland. Tooth decay, gum infection, or a dental abscess may cause nearby swelling with toothache, bad taste, pus, or fever. Angioedema is a deeper swelling that may affect the lips after an exposure and can progress to the tongue or throat. A clinician needs the history and examination to distinguish these patterns.

Use cool water rinses, select soft foods, and avoid heat, alcohol-containing mouthwash, spicy foods, and any newly introduced oral product. A cold pack held against the outer lip can reduce discomfort. Do not squeeze, cut, or apply harsh household remedies to the swelling. Contact a dentist for tooth or gum symptoms, or a clinician if the area is persistent, recurrent, or unexplained.

Seek emergency help for swelling that rapidly increases or involves the tongue or throat, breathing or swallowing difficulty, drooling, voice change, faintness, or hives. Seek urgent dental or medical care for fever, severe tooth pain, pus, facial swelling, or trouble opening the mouth. A sore or firm area that does not heal also deserves an examination.

Ask whether the location matches a tooth, gum, salivary gland, injury, or allergic reaction. Share recent dental work, medicines, foods, and oral products, and ask how long to watch the area before arranging a review.
