Inside of Lip Swollen on One Side: What It Can Mean

A single swollen area is commonly connected to something touching that spot: a bitten lip, sharp tooth, dental appliance, burn, or a small blocked salivary duct. A clear or bluish, soft bump may be a mucus-filled cyst. Infection is more concerning when swelling is painful and accompanied by fever, redness, pus, or tooth sensitivity. Allergy-related angioedema can begin in one area but may spread beyond it, so monitor the tongue and throat as well.

Look for a visible injury without repeatedly prodding it. Rinse with cool water, keep the area clean, avoid spicy or very hot foods, and place a cool pack outside the lip for short periods. Do not pierce a cyst-like bump or use leftover antibiotics. A dentist can check a sharp tooth or dental source; a clinician can assess swelling that does not settle or keeps recurring.

Call emergency services for rapid spread, tongue or throat swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty, trouble swallowing, voice change, faintness, or hives. Arrange same-day medical or dental care for fever, increasing pain, pus, spreading facial swelling, or difficulty opening the mouth. Prompt assessment is also sensible when a firm sore or lump remains instead of healing.

Tell the clinician when the swelling began, whether you bit the area, and whether it changes during meals. Ask whether a tooth, salivary gland, infection, or exposure could explain it, and what follow-up is needed if the lump remains.
