Inside of Lip Is Swollen: Causes and What to Do

A recent bite, sharp tooth, hot food, or dental procedure can injure the moist lining and create local puffiness. A blocked minor salivary gland may form a smooth, soft bump, while a mouth infection may bring pain, warmth, pus, fever, or a bad taste. Lip swelling can also be part of angioedema, which may develop after a food, medicine, or insect exposure. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Rinse gently with cool water and avoid foods, toothpaste, cosmetics, or medicines that seem to trigger the change. Choose cool, soft foods, do not pop or scrape a bump, and use a wrapped cold pack briefly on the outside of the lip. Arrange a dental or medical assessment if pain, a sore, or swelling persists, returns, or interferes with eating.

Get emergency help if swelling spreads quickly or affects the tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, faintness, or widespread hives. Seek prompt care for fever, facial swelling, severe pain, pus, or inability to drink. Sudden swelling after a new food or medicine warrants urgent advice; angioedema can involve deeper tissues.
