What should you know about insecticide treated nets?

The mesh is a physical screen, while its treatment can repel or kill insects that approach or land on it. This makes the net useful during sleep, when exposed skin may otherwise be easy for insects to reach. It is not a medicine and does not cure a bite, fever or a tumour.

Protection depends on the net forming a continuous enclosure. A net that is too small, badly tucked, damaged or pulled away from the sleeping surface can leave openings. Do not add extra chemicals to the fabric unless the manufacturer gives clear instructions.

Hang the net so it does not press against the sleeper, then tuck the lower edge as directed. Inspect it in daylight for holes, loose seams and worn attachment points. Wash it only in the recommended way, dry it as instructed and keep it away from open flames. Replace it when the material or treatment no longer meets the product guidance.

If you have neuroendocrine tumours or are receiving treatment, use the net as one layer of bite prevention. Keep taking prescribed medicines and attend planned reviews. A clinician may also advise on clothing, screens or other measures based on your surroundings and health.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, throat or facial swelling, collapse, severe weakness or a rapidly spreading allergic rash. Arrange medical assessment for fever, shaking chills, persistent diarrhoea or vomiting, severe headache, confusion, or a bite that develops expanding redness, warmth, pus or worsening pain.

If cancer treatment has lowered your immune defences, ask your oncology team how quickly to report a fever or new illness. Avoid waiting for the net to solve symptoms that may need testing or treatment.

Ask whether your treatment changes the action you should take after a bite, which repellents are suitable, and how to recognise a fever that needs urgent review. Bring the net or its instructions if you are unsure how to clean or repair it.
