What should you know about insecticide treated bed nets?

The mesh hangs around a sleeping area so insects have less opportunity to reach exposed skin. The treatment on the fibres can discourage contact and may kill insects that land on the net. It is a prevention measure for insect bites; it does not diagnose or treat cancer, fever or another illness.

A net works only when it fully covers the sleeping space and is tucked according to its design. Tears, gaps and loose edges reduce protection. The insecticide is designed for the net material, so do not apply household insect spray or other chemicals to it unless the product instructions specifically allow this.

Check the net before sleep, especially around seams and corners. Tuck it under the mattress or sleeping mat when instructed, and keep skin from resting against the mesh where possible. Follow the label for washing, drying and replacement; harsh washing or heat can reduce the treatment. Keep the net away from flames, stoves and candles, and store it dry when it is not in use.

If you are being treated for a neuroendocrine tumour, a bed net may reduce bites but does not replace medicines, appointments or advice about infection prevention. Treatment choices such as Targeted Radioisotope Therapy, Tumour Removal Surgery or Targeted Therapy are separate clinical decisions.

Seek prompt medical care for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, confusion, fainting, or a rapidly worsening illness after an insect bite. Contact a clinician for fever, chills, persistent vomiting, severe headache, unusual bleeding or a bite area that becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful.

People receiving cancer treatment may need earlier advice for fever or signs of infection because treatment can affect the body's defences. A net can lower exposure to bites, but it cannot prevent every insect-borne illness.

Ask which insect-bite precautions fit your treatment, whether fever needs same-day assessment, and which washing or insect-repellent products are compatible with your sleeping arrangement. Tell the team about any reaction after a bite or after handling the net.
