Insect Bites and Stings Treatments: What Helps

Most insect bites and stings improve with simple first aid, symptom relief, and monitoring for allergic or skin infection signs. Move away from the insect, wash the area with soap and water, and remove a visible bee stinger by gently scraping it sideways with a card. Avoid squeezing a stinger or scratching the skin, which can increase irritation and introduce bacteria. A cool, clean compress can ease soreness, itching, and swelling. Treatment depends on the reaction and on where the bite or sting occurred.

An insect bite often causes a small itchy or tender bump as the skin reacts to saliva. A sting can cause sharper pain because venom is delivered into the skin. Redness and swelling may spread a little around the site before settling. Do not apply household chemicals, soil, or other irritants. A clinician can help distinguish a local reaction from cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection that may cause increasing warmth, pain, swelling, or discharge.

Keep the affected area clean and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Elevating an arm or leg can reduce swelling. A pharmacist may suggest an antihistamine for troublesome itching or an appropriate soothing cream; follow the product directions and check before giving medicines to a child, during pregnancy, or alongside other medicines. Do not scratch blisters. A GP consultation is useful when the reaction is persistent, recurrent, extensive, or difficult to identify.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, faintness, confusion, or widespread hives after a bite or sting. These can be signs of anaphylaxis. If you have a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector, use it as directed and seek emergency help. Arrange prompt medical assessment if redness and pain are worsening, the area feels hot, pus appears, red streaks develop, or fever occurs, as these may indicate cellulitis. Seek advice after a sting in the mouth, throat, or near the eye, or after multiple stings.

Ask what type of reaction your symptoms suggest, which medicine is suitable for your age and health, and how to reduce the chance of another reaction. Mention the insect if known, the time of the bite or sting, changes in the skin, and any breathing or whole-body symptoms. If a previous reaction affected breathing or caused faintness, ask whether you need an allergy assessment and an emergency action plan.
