Insect Bite With a Swollen Lip: What to Know

Bite saliva or venom can trigger inflammation at the contact site. The lip has soft tissue that can look dramatically swollen even when the reaction is limited. Itching, warmth, redness, or a small central mark can occur. Swelling that spreads beyond the lip, affects the tongue or throat, or appears with widespread hives may signal angioedema, an allergic swelling condition.

The appearance alone cannot identify the insect. Note when the swelling began, whether it is increasing, and whether you were bitten elsewhere. A clinician can assess the pattern and your symptoms together.

Move away from the suspected insect and gently wash the area with soap and water. Apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short intervals, keeping your head raised if comfortable. Avoid scratching, squeezing, or applying irritating household products to the lip. Do not eat or drink anything that makes swallowing difficult.

If the reaction remains mild and local, a pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine is suitable. Follow the product directions and check first if you are pregnant, treating a child, or taking other medicines.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, difficulty swallowing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
