What should you know about insect bite antibiotic treatment?

Antibiotics are used for an infected insect bite, not for the usual itch and swelling of a simple bite. A clinician decides whether infection is present and which treatment is suitable.

An uncomplicated bite often causes a local itchy or sore area that gradually settles. Infection may cause redness that expands, increasing warmth, worsening pain, swelling, pus, or fever. Scratching can break the skin and allow bacteria to enter. These changes can resemble a strong local allergic reaction, so the pattern over time and an examination matter.

Wash the area gently with soap and water, pat it dry, and avoid scratching. A cool compress can ease discomfort, while keeping the affected limb raised may reduce swelling. Do not use leftover antibiotics or share medicine. If a clinician prescribes antibiotics, take them exactly as directed and ask what to do if you develop a rash, diarrhoea, or another suspected reaction.

Seek prompt assessment if redness is spreading, pain is escalating, pus appears, movement becomes difficult, or fever develops. Get emergency help for breathing trouble, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, or widespread symptoms. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or poor circulation may need earlier advice because skin infections can worsen more quickly.

Ask whether the skin changes are infection or inflammation, whether an antibiotic is needed, how long improvement should take, and which symptoms mean you should return. Tell the clinician about medicine allergies, recent antibiotics, and any conditions that affect healing.
