What should you know about inorganic failure to thrive?

A clinician may use this term when a child's weight or growth pattern falls away from the expected curve without a clear medical illness explaining it. Possible contributors include difficulty latching, tiring during feeds, restricted food choices, feeding conflict, limited access to suitable food, or stress in the home. The label does not assign blame to a parent or child. Growth needs assessment over time, including measurements, feeding history, development, and the child's general health.

Arrange a child health assessment so a clinician can review the growth chart and watch feeding if needed. Keep a simple record of feeds, drinks, vomiting, stools, and wet nappies or toilet visits. Offer calm, regular meals or feeds without pressure, and follow the clinician's advice about portions, supplements, or feeding support. Do not start high-calorie products or force feeding without guidance.

Seek urgent medical help if the child is unusually sleepy, difficult to wake, struggling to breathe, repeatedly vomiting, showing signs of dehydration, or unable to keep feeds down. Contact a clinician promptly for a clear drop in intake, fewer wet nappies, persistent diarrhoea, blood in vomit or stool, or loss of previously gained skills.
