What should you know about an inner-thigh lump under the skin?

A tender, red lump may be an inflamed follicle or boil, while a smooth, mobile lump can have a different cause. Location, depth, firmness, overlying colour, and whether it drains are useful clues, but they cannot establish a diagnosis by touch alone. A lump can sit in the skin, under the skin, or deeper in the groin area, so a clinician may examine nearby lymph nodes as well.

Do not squeeze, lance, or repeatedly massage the area. Keep it clean, reduce rubbing, and use a warm—not hot—compress for comfort if the surface is tender. Note when it began, whether it changes with movement or the menstrual cycle, and whether there is drainage or fever. A clinician may recommend observation, drainage, treatment for infection, or another plan after examination. Steroid injection into the skin is reserved for selected diagnosed lesions and should not be used on an unexplained lump.

Arrange prompt medical review for a lump that is enlarging, hard, fixed, repeatedly returning, bleeding, ulcerated, or present without settling. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, red streaks, or feeling acutely unwell. These features can indicate an infection needing treatment or another problem that should not wait.
