What should you know about inner bottom lip swollen?

A single tender area can follow accidental biting, a sharp tooth edge, hot food, a new toothpaste, or a mouth ulcer. Redness, warmth, worsening tenderness, pus, or fever can point towards infection. Swelling that appears suddenly, especially after a food, medicine, sting, or cosmetic exposure, can be angioedema, which may affect the lips, tongue, face, or throat.

The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether the swelling is on one side, whether there is a blister or ulcer, and whether it is changing over hours.

Avoid the suspected irritant and do not pick, pierce, or squeeze the area. Rinse gently with cool water, choose soft foods, and use a cool compress on the outside of the lip for short periods. Keep oral hygiene gentle around the swollen spot. A clinician or dentist can examine a persistent lump, ulcer, tooth-related injury, or suspected infection and advise treatment.

Seek emergency help if swelling involves the tongue or throat, or if you develop trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, dizziness, or widespread hives.
