What should you know about Inivata liquid biopsy?

The test looks for fragments of DNA released by tumour cells into the bloodstream. Depending on the test ordered, results may help identify molecular features, provide information when tissue is difficult to obtain, or help a team assess how a tumour is changing. A blood result is interpreted alongside scans, symptoms, examination findings, and any tissue sample; it does not replace clinical judgement.

A result may be reported as detected, not detected, or unsuitable for interpretation. A not-detected result cannot always exclude cancer because a tumour may release little DNA into blood. Your clinician will explain whether another sample or a different test is needed.

Ask which question the test is intended to answer and when the result is expected. Blood collection is usually straightforward, but tell the team about medicines or symptoms that could affect the appointment. Keep your oncology visits even if the result is reassuring: treatment decisions may also depend on pathology and imaging. Ask how the finding could change your next step and whether confirmation with tissue is needed.

Contact your cancer team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, or a rapidly changing symptom. These symptoms need assessment because of the symptom itself, not because a liquid biopsy result proves a diagnosis.
