What should you know about ingrown pubic hair?

The bump may be red, itchy, sore, or firm, with a hair sometimes visible beneath the surface. Friction, sweat, and close grooming can keep the follicle irritated. Folliculitis may produce similar bumps, while a recurring pattern after shaving can resemble razor bumps. Keratosis pilaris is a different follicle-related condition and is more often rough and widespread than a single tender pubic spot.

Stop shaving, waxing, or plucking the affected area until it has settled. Rinse gently, apply a warm compress, and wear loose, breathable underwear. Do not squeeze the lump or use a sharp tool to uncover the hair. Avoid fragranced products on irritated or broken skin. For prevention, reduce very close shaving, use a clean razor, follow the direction of growth, and avoid repeated strokes. If the problem keeps recurring, ask about laser hair removal and whether it fits your skin and hair characteristics.

Get medical advice if pain, warmth, swelling, or pus is increasing, or if redness spreads. Seek prompt care with fever, chills, or feeling unwell. A hard, deep, persistent, or repeatedly returning lump should be examined because other skin conditions can occur in the pubic region.

Ask whether the spot is an ingrown hair or folliculitis, whether treatment is needed, and which hair-removal technique will create less irritation. Tell the clinician if the lump is deep, recurrent, or draining.
