Short answer

Ingrown hairs on the head usually involve a hair trapped in an irritated follicle after close trimming or shaving; keep the area clean, avoid digging, and arrange a review for painful, draining, or persistent bumps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a head bump may represent

On the scalp or another shaved part of the head, an ingrown hair can cause a small itchy, tender, or red bump. Clippers, close shaving, helmets, hats, sweat, and rubbing may irritate follicles. Several similar pustules may indicate folliculitis. A firm or enlarging lump, a crust that does not heal, or a spot causing hair loss should not be assumed to be an ingrown hair; examination can clarify the diagnosis.

Care for the area

Stop close shaving or trimming over the affected spot until it settles. Cleanse gently, rinse away sweat after activity, and avoid scratching, squeezing, or trying to extract a deeply embedded hair. Keep hats, helmets, clippers, and pillowcases clean, without sharing grooming tools. Do not apply irritating products to broken skin. If the issue follows repeated close hair removal, discuss a different technique or laser hair removal where appropriate.

When to arrange an assessment

Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening pain, warmth, swelling, spreading redness, heavy drainage, fever, or feeling unwell. Arrange a routine skin review if the bump remains, returns in the same place, scars, bleeds, or is associated with a patch of hair loss. A clinician may need to inspect the scalp closely and choose treatment based on the cause.

Questions worth asking

Ask whether the lesion fits an ingrown hair or folliculitis, whether your grooming tool or product is contributing, and how to clean or replace equipment safely. Mention scalp conditions, medications, drainage, and any change in nearby hair growth.

Questions people ask

Can a scalp bump be an ingrown hair?

It can be, especially after close shaving or trimming, but folliculitis and other scalp conditions can look similar.

Should I keep shaving the area?

Pause close shaving over the bump. Once the skin is calm, ask a professional how to resume grooming without repeatedly irritating the follicle.
