Ingrown hair removal in the vaginal area: what to know

Most so-called vaginal ingrown hairs are bumps on hair-bearing external pubic skin or the labia majora. A hair can curl back after shaving, waxing, or plucking, causing a tender bump, itch, or local redness. A sore near the vulva may also be folliculitis, an irritated cyst, or another condition, so location and appearance matter. Do not assume every genital lump is an ingrown hair.

Pause hair removal until the skin settles. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, avoid fragranced products and scrubbing, and use a clean warm compress on external skin. Do not pop the bump, cut it open, or use tweezers beneath the surface. Wear breathable underwear and reduce friction while it is sore. Get prompt medical advice for severe or increasing pain, spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, fever, or difficulty walking or sitting. Arrange an examination if the lump persists, recurs, blisters, ulcerates, bleeds, or is not clearly linked to hair removal. A clinician can distinguish folliculitis or an abscess from causes that need different care.
