Treatment for an ingrown hair that became a hard lump

A firm bump can result from a hair trapped beneath the skin, continuing follicle inflammation, a small cyst, or infection. Tenderness, warmth, spreading redness, and drainage make infection more concerning, while a smooth lump that remains without surface change may need a different assessment. A clinician may inspect the opening of the follicle and the surrounding skin before recommending treatment.

Razor bumps can recur when coarse or curly hairs re-enter the skin after shaving. Folliculitis can produce multiple inflamed follicles. Similar-looking rough bumps may be keratosis pilaris, which is managed differently.

Until the area is assessed, pause hair removal and use a warm compress with gentle cleansing. Avoid squeezing, cutting, or inserting tools into the lump. Depending on the findings, a clinician may suggest a topical medicine, treatment for infection, removal of a retained hair, or drainage of a collection. Do not start prescription-strength products without advice. For repeated episodes, discuss shaving technique, another hair-removal method, or laser hair removal.

Seek prompt medical care if pain is escalating, redness is spreading, the skin is hot, pus is present, or fever occurs. Make an appointment when the lump lasts, enlarges, returns after treatment, or leaves a thick or dark scar. Earlier review is sensible when the lump is near sensitive skin or makes sitting, walking, or normal grooming difficult.
