What should you know about an ingrown hair cyst on the scalp?

You may notice a rounded, sore, itchy, or firm spot after shaving the scalp, trimming very closely, or wearing gear that rubs the skin. Inflammation can make the area feel larger than the original follicle. Folliculitis and other scalp cysts may produce similar findings, so a lump should not be labelled an ingrown hair without an examination when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Stop close hair removal over the bump and cleanse the scalp gently. A warm compress may soothe discomfort and help surface drainage, but it should not be hot enough to burn. Keep combs, clippers, and pillowcases clean, and avoid scratching. Never cut into or squeeze the lump. If scalp bumps recur after shaving, ask about technique changes or laser hair removal as a longer-term hair-reduction option.

Contact a clinician if pain, warmth, pus, crusting, or redness is increasing, or if the swelling does not settle. Prompt assessment is sensible for fever, feeling faint or ill, rapidly spreading redness, or many painful bumps. A recurring scalp lump may need a different plan, such as treatment for folliculitis or assessment of another cyst.
