Inflamed gallbladder without gallstones: what to know

Gallbladder inflammation is called cholecystitis. Although gallstones are a frequent trigger, inflammation can sometimes develop when scans do not show a stone. Reduced bile flow, infection, serious illness, or irritation of the gallbladder wall may be involved. Symptoms can include steady pain beneath the right ribs, pain spreading to the back or right shoulder, tenderness, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and fever. Arrange prompt medical review if pain persists or returns, especially with fever or repeated vomiting. A clinician may examine your abdomen and arrange blood tests and ultrasound or another scan. Until assessed, take small sips of fluid if you can keep them down and avoid alcohol or meals that clearly worsen the pain. Do not start leftover antibiotics or use someone else's pain medicine. Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, persistent vomiting, faintness, confusion, difficulty breathing, or a high temperature with chills. Yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, or unusually pale stools also needs prompt attention because it may indicate a problem with bile flow. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you cannot drink enough to stay hydrated.
