What should you know about an inflamed dermatofibroma?

A dermatofibroma is a firm skin nodule that may follow a minor injury or insect bite. It can be pink, brown, or darker than nearby skin and may feel tethered when pinched. Friction, scratching, shaving, or a knock can make an established nodule temporarily tender or inflamed.

Inflammation does not confirm that every changing lump is a dermatofibroma. A new nodule, bleeding, ulceration, rapid enlargement, persistent pain, or a marked change in colour warrants an examination so other causes can be considered.

Leave the area alone, cleanse it gently, and reduce rubbing from tight clothing, straps, or repeated shaving. A cool clean compress may ease irritation. Do not cut, burn, pick, or try to flatten the nodule at home.

A dermatologist can compare the lesion with its earlier appearance and decide whether monitoring is enough. If it remains troublesome, catches on clothing, or cannot be confidently identified, removal by surgical excision may be discussed. Removing it leaves a wound and a scar, so the reason for treatment matters.

Book a dermatology review for a nodule that keeps changing, bleeds without clear trauma, forms a sore, or stays painful after friction has stopped. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, pus, fever, or severe swelling. Take a clear photograph for comparison if the lesion changes between appointments.

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, what features should be monitored, and whether a biopsy or excisional surgery is appropriate. Discuss scar placement, wound care, and what change should prompt an earlier review.
