What should you know about inferior dislocation of shoulder reduction?

In an inferior dislocation, the upper arm is displaced downward from the shoulder socket, often leaving the arm held overhead or in an unusual position. The injury may stretch muscles, the joint capsule, nerves, or blood vessels, and a fracture can occur alongside the dislocation. X-rays usually help define the position and look for associated bone injury.

Reduction means guiding the joint back into alignment using a controlled technique. Pain relief or sedation may be used so the muscles relax and the procedure can be performed safely. The clinician checks circulation and nerve function before and after reduction, then confirms alignment with imaging.

Treat a suspected dislocation as an emergency. Support the arm in the position found, keep the person still, remove rings if swelling is developing, and do not try to push the shoulder back yourself. Avoid food and drink until a medical team advises, because sedation or urgent treatment may be needed.

After reduction, a sling or other support may be used for a period chosen by the treating team. Follow instructions about pain relief, wound or skin checks, and movement. Physiotherapy can later restore safe mobility, shoulder control, and strength, with progression based on the injury and follow-up examination.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department immediately for a shoulder held in an abnormal position, severe pain after an injury, numbness, weakness, a pale or blue hand, or a hand that feels cold. Worsening pain, loss of pulses, or increasing swelling after reduction also needs immediate reassessment. Do not drive yourself if the arm is dislocated or you have received sedating medicine.

Ask whether there is a fracture or nerve injury, how alignment was confirmed, how long support is needed, and which movements must be avoided. Clarify follow-up timing, warning signs after discharge, and when Physiotherapy should begin.
