What should you know about infection spread to bone?

Bone infection can begin when germs travel through the bloodstream, enter through a wound or operation, or spread from nearby infected tissue. Symptoms vary with the affected bone and may include deep pain, tenderness, warmth, redness, swelling, fever, tiredness, or difficulty using the nearby limb. An open wound or draining area may provide an entry point.

A clinician may combine an examination with blood tests and imaging. Sampling tissue or fluid can help identify the germ and select treatment. Infection may affect bone healing, so the plan can include antibiotics, wound care, drainage, and removal of unhealthy tissue when needed.

Arrange prompt assessment if pain persists near a wound, implant, ulcer, or recent procedure, especially when redness, warmth, drainage, or fever is present. Keep wounds clean and covered, avoid picking at them, and take prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Do not stop antibiotics early unless the treating clinician changes the plan.

These changes can signal a spreading or severe infection.
