What should you know about infected sweat rash?

Heat rash develops when sweat ducts become blocked, often in hot, humid conditions or beneath tight clothing. Small red bumps, prickling, and itching can occur without infection. Scratching damages the skin barrier and may allow bacteria in. Increasing tenderness, warmth, swelling, yellow or cloudy drainage, crusting, or redness spreading beyond the original rash suggest infection rather than uncomplicated irritation.

Other conditions can resemble sweat rash, including contact dermatitis, folliculitis, or an allergic reaction. A rash that keeps returning, involves an unusual area, or does not improve after cooling the skin deserves a proper diagnosis.

Cool and dry the skin, wear loose breathable clothing, change out of damp garments, and wash gently without scrubbing. Avoid scratching, heavy ointments that trap heat, fragranced products, and sharing towels. A plain emollient may soothe dry surrounding skin, while a topical corticosteroid should be used only when a clinician recommends it for the diagnosed rash and not on suspected infection. Arrange medical review if symptoms are worsening or draining.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, red streaks, a collection of pus, fever, shaking chills, faintness, confusion, or breathing difficulty. Prompt assessment is also sensible when the rash affects a newborn, a person with reduced immunity, or a large area, or when cooling and gentle care do not settle it.
