Infected intertrigo: what to know

Heat, moisture and friction can weaken the skin where folds touch, such as beneath the breasts, in the groin, abdomen or armpits. The initial rash may sting, itch and look red or raw. Yeast or bacteria can then grow in the damaged, damp area. New drainage, an unpleasant smell, crusting, increasing tenderness, small surrounding spots or redness spreading beyond the fold suggest added infection. A skin yeast infection is one possible cause, but appearance alone cannot identify the organism.

Wash gently and dry the fold thoroughly by patting; a cool setting on a hair dryer can help without rubbing. Change damp clothing, choose breathable fabrics and use a clean, dry layer to reduce skin-on-skin friction. Avoid fragranced products, aggressive scrubbing and thick occlusive creams unless prescribed. A clinician may recommend a topical antifungal treatment or another medicine after examining the rash. Recurrent moisture may call for advice about sweat control, including prescription antiperspirant.

Book prompt medical advice if the rash is painful, cracked, draining, spreading or failing to improve with gentle drying measures. Seek urgent help for fever, rapidly increasing redness or swelling, severe pain, red streaks, confusion or feeling very unwell. People with diabetes or reduced immune defenses should seek advice early because skin-fold infections may worsen more quickly.
