Treatment for an infected ingrown hair

A clinician first looks at the bump, surrounding redness, drainage and tenderness. A trapped hair near the surface may be lifted out with sterile technique. If the follicle is inflamed, the plan may focus on reducing irritation and treating the cause. Pus, spreading redness or a deeper tender lump can require a different medical approach. Several look-alike problems, including folliculitis and razor bumps, do not all need the same medicine.

Stop shaving, waxing or plucking the affected skin. Clean it gently with water and a mild cleanser, then dry by patting. A warm, clean compress can ease discomfort and encourage natural drainage. Keep hands, towels and razors clean, and avoid tight clothing that rubs the spot. Do not use leftover antibiotics, steroid creams or harsh scrubs unless a clinician has advised them. For frequent recurrence, discuss a less irritating hair-removal routine or laser hair removal.

Seek prompt care when the red area is enlarging, pain is escalating, drainage is increasing, or a firm lump is forming. Fever, chills, red streaking, marked weakness or rapidly worsening swelling warrant urgent assessment. Do not delay review for a lesion in a sensitive area or if your immune system or wound healing is affected.
