What should you know about infected hair follicle anus?

A hair follicle can become irritated or infected when bacteria enter through a small break in the skin. This may produce a red, sore, itchy, or pus-filled bump. Friction, sweating, shaving, and tight clothing can irritate the skin around the buttocks and anal opening.

A painful lump beside the anus may instead be a deeper abscess, an inflamed cyst, haemorrhoid, or a problem involving the bowel or skin. An abscess can worsen beneath the surface and may need drainage, so do not try to squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump yourself. The location makes an examination especially useful.

Gently wash with water and mild soap, pat dry, and wear loose, breathable underwear. A warm sitz bath may ease discomfort if it feels soothing. Keep the area dry after sweating and pause shaving or hair removal until the skin has healed. Use only medicines recommended for you, especially if there is drainage or broken skin.

Arrange medical review if the bump is enlarging, draining pus, repeatedly returning, or not settling. A clinician can examine the skin, check for a deeper collection, and decide whether local care, drainage, or antibiotic treatment is appropriate. Do not share towels, and wash hands after touching the area.

Seek prompt care for severe or throbbing pain, rapidly spreading redness, fever, chills, foul-smelling drainage, difficulty sitting or passing stool, or a lump that is rapidly enlarging. Get urgent help if you feel faint, confused, or very unwell, or if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, or recent surgery in the area.
