Infantigo rash treatment: what to know

Infantigo is a contagious bacterial skin infection that can form small blisters, sores, or yellow-brown crusts, often around the nose and mouth but also on exposed skin. It can spread through scratching, close contact, or shared towels and clothing. A clinician may distinguish it from eczema or other rashes by examining the pattern, crusting, tenderness, and any drainage.

Treatment depends on how many areas are involved and how deep the infection appears. A limited infection may be treated with a prescribed topical medicine; more extensive or worsening infection may need medicine taken by mouth. The rash itself is a symptom, so a diagnosis matters before applying steroid or combination creams.

Wash hands before and after touching the area. Gently clean the skin with water and mild cleanser, pat it dry, and follow the prescribed treatment exactly. Do not pick crusts, squeeze blisters, or share towels, pillows, razors, or clothing. Keep nails short and cover lesions loosely if advised, especially when a child may scratch.

A child should avoid close skin contact and group activities until a clinician says the infection is no longer likely to spread. Wash used fabrics regularly. Avoid using leftover antibiotics or household antiseptics, since they can irritate the skin or mask changes that help a clinician assess progress.

Arrange medical assessment for a new crusted, oozing, or rapidly spreading rash, particularly in a baby or child. Seek urgent care if there is fever, marked pain, swelling near the eye, facial swelling, unusual sleepiness, poor drinking, or skin that becomes hot and red beyond the original area. Prompt review is also needed when sores keep returning or do not improve with the prescribed plan.

Ask whether the rash is infantigo or another condition, which treatment is appropriate for its extent, how long to use it, and when the child can return to nursery or school. Ask how to clean the area, whether household contacts need advice, and what change should trigger an earlier review.
