What should you know about infant scarlet fever?

Scarlet fever is usually linked with group A streptococcus. A child may have fever, sore throat, swollen glands, a red tongue, and a rough rash. The rash can be less obvious on darker skin, so general illness and throat symptoms also matter.

Rash and fever have many causes, so an infant needs examination. A clinician may inspect the throat, assess hydration, and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Arrange medical review promptly, especially if feeding is poor. Offer regular feeds, keep clothing comfortable, avoid sharing utensils or towels, and wash hands after wiping the mouth or nose.

If antibiotic treatment is prescribed, give it exactly as directed. Do not use leftover antibiotics; ask how to handle a missed or vomited dose.

Seek emergency care if the infant is difficult to wake, struggles to breathe, has a seizure, develops purple or rapidly spreading skin changes, or cannot keep feeds down. Markedly fewer wet nappies also need urgent attention.

Contact a clinician quickly for fever in a very young infant, worsening sore throat, persistent vomiting, or a rash with a deteriorating general condition.
