What should you know about infant mumps?

Mumps is a contagious viral infection affecting salivary glands. Swelling may appear at the cheek or jaw and can affect one or both sides. Babies may show less specific signs, including irritability, reduced feeding, fever, or sleepiness. Swollen glands can have other causes, so swelling alone does not establish mumps. Tell the clinic before arrival if mumps is suspected so staff can reduce exposure to others.

Keep the infant at home from childcare while seeking advice, encourage breast milk or usual fluids, and monitor wet nappies. Use only fever relief recommended for the child's age and weight; never give aspirin to a child. Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or dummies, and wash hands carefully. Keep a record of fever, feeding, urine, and any contact with illness. A clinician can review vaccination history and decide whether testing or follow-up is needed.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, marked drowsiness, a seizure, severe dehydration, persistent inconsolable crying, or a very young baby with fever. Get prompt medical advice if the infant is drinking poorly, has repeated vomiting, severe headache, neck stiffness, or swelling that rapidly worsens. Avoid waiting for the glands to become obviously swollen if the baby seems significantly unwell.

Ask which symptoms need monitoring, how long to keep the child away from others, and whether household contacts need advice. Share the vaccination record, symptom timeline, fluid intake, wet nappies, and known exposures.
