Infant larynx concerns: what parents should know

The larynx sits at the top of the windpipe and contains the vocal cords. Swelling or irritation can change a baby’s cry, make the voice sound hoarse, or produce a harsh cough. A Common Cold may inflame the upper airway, while Acid Reflux can irritate the throat after feeds. Hoarse Voice and Sore Throat are symptoms to describe, not diagnoses by themselves.

Listen for noisy breathing when your infant is calm and when crying. Note whether symptoms follow feeds, worsen when lying down, or occur with fever, blocked nose, poor feeding, or unusual tiredness.

Keep your baby calm and offer the usual feeds in manageable amounts. Hold them safely upright during and after feeds if reflux seems to worsen symptoms. Avoid smoke, vapour, strong fragrances, and attempts to inspect the throat with objects. Do not give throat lozenges, honey, or unadvised medicines. Book a GP Consultation if hoarseness lasts, recurs, or affects feeding.

Get emergency help if your infant has struggling or noisy breathing at rest, pulls in at the ribs, pauses breathing, turns blue or grey, drools and cannot swallow, or becomes floppy. Seek urgent advice for reduced feeding, fewer wet nappies, rapidly increasing swelling, or a sudden change after choking. Do not wait for a routine appointment when breathing is worsening.
